Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte)

Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte)

A warming, anti-inflammatory drink with roots in Ayurvedic tradition. Deeply comforting before bed.

Time: 5 minutes  ·  Yield: 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 240 ml (1 cup) milk of your choice (whole dairy, oat, or coconut)
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric (or 1 Tbsp fresh turmeric, grated)
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger (or ½ tsp fresh ginger, grated)
  • Pinch of black pepper (essential — it increases turmeric absorption by up to 2,000%)
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
  • ½ tsp coconut oil or ghee (optional)

Method

  1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Don't boil it.
  2. Whisk in the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper. Continue whisking as it heats to prevent clumps.
  3. When steaming and hot, remove from heat. Stir in the honey and coconut oil.
  4. Pour into a mug. Dust the top with a little extra cinnamon.
  5. *Storage:** Best made fresh. The turmeric paste (turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, pepper mixed with a little water) can be made in a batch and stored in the fridge for 1 week — add 1 tsp paste to warm milk when ready.
  6. For the full medicinal deep-dive — including golden paste, bioavailability science, and why that pinch of black pepper matters so much — see The Medicinal Cabinet.*
