Garlic (fresh cloves — aged garlic also studied)

Garlic — Meta-analyses show garlic reduces blood pressure by 8-10 mmHg systolic. Also lowers LDL cholesterol and reduces arterial plaque. 1-2 raw cloves daily or aged garlic extract. Crush and wait 10 minutes before eating.

Hawthorn (berries, leaves, or flowers — dried)

Hawthorn — Used in European medicine for centuries for heart failure. Improves coronary blood flow, strengthens heart contractions, and is mildly anti-arrhythmic. Brew as tea (2 teaspoons dried berries, steep 20 minutes) or take as tincture.

Turmeric (ground or fresh root)

Turmeric — Improves endothelial function (the lining of your blood vessels). One study found curcumin as effective as exercise at improving vascular function. Also reduces arterial inflammation. Daily in food or as golden milk.

Cinnamon (Ceylon preferred for daily use)

Cinnamon — Multiple studies show cinnamon reduces fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol. 1/2 to 1 teaspoon daily. Ceylon cinnamon is safer for daily use (lower coumarin than cassia).

Hibiscus (dried flowers)

Hibiscus — Lowers systolic blood pressure by 7-13 mmHg in clinical trials. Steep 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers in hot water for 5-10 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups daily. Also delicious cold as agua de jamaica.

Cayenne (ground or fresh peppers)

Cayenne — Capsaicin improves circulation, reduces blood pressure, and may help prevent blood clots. Start small — a pinch in soups, stews, or warm lemon water. Build tolerance over time.

Serving Suggestions

Morning: warm lemon water with cayenne. With meals: garlic and turmeric in cooking. Afternoon: hibiscus tea. Evening: hawthorn tea. Daily: cinnamon in oatmeal or coffee.
