Honey-Lemon Throat Soother
A simple, warming preparation for sore throats and coughs. The honey coats and soothes, the lemon provides vitamin C, and the ginger adds warmth and circulation support.
Time: 10 minutes · Yield: About 1 cup
Ingredients
- ●1/2 cup raw honey
- ●Juice of 2 lemons
- ●1-inch piece fresh ginger, finely grated
- ●1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ●Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional — stimulates circulation and can relieve sinus pressure)
Method
- Combine the lemon juice, grated ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne in a small bowl.
- Stir in the raw honey until well combined. (The lemon juice is at room temperature, so the honey's enzymes are preserved.)
- Transfer to a small glass jar. Store in the fridge.
- *Suggested use:**
- Take 1 tablespoon straight at the onset of a sore throat
- Stir 1 tablespoon into warm (not hot) water or tea
- Take every 2-3 hours as needed
Note: This is one of the oldest remedies in the book — literally. Honey and lemon for sore throats appears in medical texts dating back thousands of years. The cayenne sounds counterintuitive for a sore throat, but it creates a warming sensation that can help relieve pain. For children over age 1, this is a safe and effective alternative to over-the-counter cough syrups (never give honey to children under 1 due to botulism risk).
