Lavender Healing Salve — Step 2: Lavender Salve
A soothing, all-purpose balm for minor cuts, scrapes, dry skin, bug bites, and chapped lips. Turn your infused oil into a portable, shelf-stable salve.
Yield: About 1 cup
Ingredients
- ●1 cup lavender-infused oil (from Step 1)
- ●1/4 cup beeswax pastilles (or grated beeswax)
- ●10–15 drops lavender essential oil (optional — for stronger scent)
- ●1 tablespoon raw honey (optional — for antibacterial properties)
- ●*Equipment:**
- ●A double boiler (or a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water)
- ●Small tins or jars for storage
- ●A cold plate (for testing consistency)
Method
- Place the infused lavender oil in a double boiler. Add the beeswax.
- Heat gently, stirring, until the beeswax is completely melted and blended with the oil.
- Drop a small amount onto a cold plate. Let it cool for 1 minute. Test consistency — it should be firm enough to hold its shape but soft enough to spread easily.
- If too hard, add a little more oil. If too soft, add a bit more beeswax. Adjust and test again.
- Remove from heat. Let cool for 2–3 minutes.
- Stir in the lavender essential oil and honey (if using).
- Pour into small tins or jars immediately — it sets fast.
- Let cool completely with lids off. Once solid, cover and label.
- *Uses:**
- Minor cuts and scrapes (clean the wound first)
- Dry, cracked skin (hands, elbows, feet)
- Bug bites and stings
- Chapped lips
- Under the nose during a cold
- On temples for a calming scent
Note: The same technique works with almost any herb — calendula (for skin healing), plantain (for bites and stings), comfrey (for bruises), or a combination. Beeswax ratio determines firmness. More beeswax = harder salve (like a lip balm). Less = softer salve (more like a thick lotion). For a vegan version, substitute candelilla wax for beeswax (use about half the amount — it's firmer).
